With our Digital Series we want to address the art world’s fast-growing preoccupation with digital technology. Every second week and over the course of six months, we will present works and other contributions by artists and artistic platforms, thereby creating an ongoing archive that revolves around the implications of digital technology on our lives.

Some of the featured artists examine digital infrastructures and the information ecologies they enable. For instance, they attempt to uncover and familiarize us with the physical framework and materiality of the Internet (Emma Charles) or develop prototypes for tools to combat mis- and disinformation in the context of information warfare (Ègor Kraft). Moreover, works such as Alex Murray’s coded script based on live security camera footage and Jacob Hurwitz-Goodman’s video essay on drone technology expose how ubiquitous monitoring systems and automated processes increasingly influence our lived experiences and perceptions of reality.

Other featured artists focus on the question: how can we orient ourselves in this digital reality mediated by screens? By employing tactics of performativity and simulation, they explore the digital domain as a sandbox where notions of space, time, and identity can be renegotiated on more fluid terms. We are pleased to host a video work from Ryan Trecartin, whose work we see as a precursor to our increasingly digitally-mediated existence, suggesting that in a world where screens get flatter and flatter, content demands to be smudged all over them.

Artists like Rustan Söderling and Miglė Vyčinaitė, working with video and 3D animation, similarly recondition the arena where fiction and drama unfold. Their work reflects the evolving landscape of digital storytelling. Such complex imagined worlds are not mere escapism, but tangible examples of imagining alternative future-presents.
